English Classes offered by Paula Debow

Tuesdays, 11:15 – 12:15, Story Writing

For children 3rd-6th grade. We will explore how to write a story by creating characters, conflicts & resolutions, dialogue, and setting. Students should be comfortable writing sentences and at least have been introduced to paragraphs. Classes will start September 9 and will end November 25. There will be writing homework each week. Cost $15.

Thursdays, 9:00-10:30, British Literature

For students in 10th-12th grade. Using the Bob Jones University British Literature textbook and the novel Northanger Abbey by Jane Austin, we explore literature of England from Beowulf to Shakespeare to the Romantic Poets to somewhat modern literature. We may need to add more classes in order to read the Shakespeare play together (no acting involved). Classes will start September 11 and will run through June 4 (unless make-up classes are needed). This class is worth ½ high school credit and is meant to be used in conjunction with other English writing, speaking, and/or grammar work. Cost $50.

Thursdays, 10:45-12:00, Edit Your Own Papers

For students in 9th-12th grade. Using students’ own papers, we will look at how papers are written from the basic building blocks of words all the way up to the finished product. How can we look at our own writing more objectively? What should we look for and how can we make improvements? Students will be expected to have one paper written before the class starts and write 2 to 3 more throughout the course. Classes will start September 11 and run through December 18 (no class November 27). Class is worth 1/4 high school credit and is meant to be used in conjunction with other English writing, speaking, and/or grammar work. Cost $25.
