One of Will Shakespeare’s funniest comedies about lunatic lovers and the economics behind matrimony, our Taming of the Shrew is set in modern day, with rap narration and lively songs and dance. We find ourselves in the city of Padua where a mother has two daughters in need of wooing and wedding.
Three men are happy to oblige and are anxious to win the hand of Bianca, the younger of the two. Unfortunately, the elder daughter Katharina has a prickly personality, which makes her a less desirable conquest. The girls’ mother, Baptista, however has a rule which must be obeyed. Bianca may not marry until her elder sibling does. In fact, the men are not even allowed in the house with Bianca, but her Latin and music tutors are. What do you suppose the men do next to get close to their beloved Bianca? You got it! Bring on the disguises!
Meanwhile a new man has hit the streets of Padua and his name is Petruchio. He is an overly confident swaggering young man who wants one thing in a wife – wealth! Petruchio claims to be up to taming the shrew known as Katharina, and so he sets himself to the task.
Our community of homeschooling families are diligently working on costumes, sets and music to make this production of The Taming of the Shrew a complete delight for all.
